Most roughness is from a build up on the surface caused by incorrect water chemistries such as a high pH and/or calcium hardness in the water. Over time this roughness will increase causing the pool surface to have a sand paper feeling that causes skin to be irritated and bathing suits to be damaged. This can literally make the swimming pool unusable.
